A new era for medical research in Detroit has officially begun.

Wayne State University held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Research Building.

The five-story, 160,000-square-foot facility represents a massive $200 million investment in the heart of Midtown Detroit.

Located at 545 E. Canfield Street, the building will replace a former parking lot, transforming the space into a hub of innovation.

University and city leaders, including WSU President Kimberly Andrews Espy and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, gathered to celebrate the milestone.

This is more than just a building; it's a commitment to solving complex health issues that disproportionately affect Detroiters.

The research center will focus on critical areas like oncology, neurosciences, immunology, and infectious diseases.

A key goal is to shorten the time it takes for scientific discoveries to become real-world medical treatments.

The project is backed by a significant $100 million commitment from the State of Michigan, with the remainder funded through university resources and philanthropy.

This facility will fundamentally change the landscape of health science in our city.

It is designed to foster collaboration, with a pedestrian bridge connecting it to the Gordon H. Scott Hall of Basic Medical Sciences.

The potential for life-saving breakthroughs is immense.

Officials believe the new center will not only improve community health but also boost Michigan's economy by attracting top talent and creating high-paying jobs.

Construction is now underway, with an expected completion date in early 2028.
